The Foundation NAEMI (National Arts Exhibition of the Mentally III Inc) presents its 29º Anniversary Annual Art Brut Exhibition opening on April 21st 5-7pm at Borders Picture Framing & Gallery (1601 SW 1st St Miami, FL 33135). Works from Misleidys Castillo, Isaac Crespo, Christopher Paul, Sebastián Ferreira, Damián Valdés Dilla, Lucia Ballester and Peyi Rodríguez Cabrera are for sale. There is free admission

NAEMI is dedicated to discovering, studying, promoting, exhibiting, and preserving the art of those struggling with mental illness throughout the world. It has been a pioneer in supporting “outsider” art.

“Our aim has been to contribute to their realization as artists, because they produce something useful for society. We represent the sphere of the outsiders so they can exhibit, despite the fact that in the beginning their aim was not to make art” – Juan Martin, Founder of NAEMI in a recent interview for Magazine ONCuba.

Outsider art produced by untrained artists recovering from mental illnesses who are typically unconnected to the conventional art world—not by choice but by circumstance. The “classic” figures of outsider art were socially or culturally marginal figures. They were usually undereducated; they almost invariably embraced unconventional views of the world, sometimes alien to the prevailing dominant culture.

Until the end of April, NAEMI has the exhibition “Encounters / Encuentros” at the Embassy of Spain in La Havana Cuba opened to the public.

This 29º annual exhibition will be on view until May 21st 2017. Borders Picture Framing & Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10 am to 6pm.

Established in 1988 in Miami, Florida. Every year, our Annual Art Exhibition in Miami receives around 900 entries from all over the USA, Spain, England, Argentina, Paraguay, Mexico, Brazil, and Chile. NAEMI has in its permanent collection nearly 1200 art works. Art experts in the field have carefully curated this collection during the past 29 years. NAEMI has published 7 books about the art of the mentally ill. The books spotlight most often for the first time some of the world’s most talented artists suffering from mental illness. NAEMI has done pioneering work in recognizing the artistic talent among many individuals suffering from mental illness and provides a forum for bringing these talents to public awareness.
