Robert Leclerc, and his Thai wife Nisaratana Deeching, started to import wares directly from Thailand to Miami. Her family in Thailand had been in the business for years and the venture was supported by her extended network of relations. Now they both go shopping a few times a year and hit the (silk) road to find antiques and unique pieces that are shipped in containers several times a month. They cover many countries such as Tibet, Mongolia, China and, of course, Thailand. They sometimes find rare things on the side of the road in local markets, even in farms.
They are able to offer monks' furniture formerly located in temples, handmade vases, religious artifacts, hundreds-of-years-old cabinets, benches and armoires, lamps and Buddha heads of various sizes and material, fountains and carvings. Some pieces are covered in gold leaf paint, the same used in temples and on steeples. Leclerc says his wife is able to get things that a non-Asian could not. The prices cover an enormous range, from $15 to $100,000 for special pieces.
