The Colony Theater in Miami’s South Beach was home this past month to the production of Miami Lyric Opera’s Marina. Presented for 2 nights only, this 3-act Spanish Opera with the music of Emilio Arrieta and lyrics by Francisco Camprodon, displayed the talents of Beverly Coulter, Maruchi Urquiaga, Aurelio Gabaldon, Hugo Marcos, Lilo del Campo, Diego Baner and Ismael Gonzalez under the artistic direction of Italian lyric tenor Raffaele Cardone.
Together, this small but diverse company brought the story of Marina, a young woman torn between her affections for an older man, Jorge, and the advances of a man obsessed with the idea of their marriage, Pascual, to a packed Miami audience.
The story of this love triangle unfolds as we discover that Marina’s love for Jorge is anything but unrequited. However, a series of provocations, meddlers, and misunderstandings make the couple’s union an unlikely one. Touching Arias by Marina and Jorge and spirited Chorus numbers made this rendition of Marina an enlightening and emotional experience.
The Miami Lyric Opera (MLO), lead by president and artistic director Italian tenor Raffaele Cardone, was formed for the Miami opera lover and enthusiast as well as to excite the newcomer. Since 2004, Miami Lyric Opera has successfully presented the Miami audience with over 40 opera and concert performances such as La Traviata, Cavalleria, Pagliacci, Don Pasquale, L’Elisir d’amore, and Madame Butterfly. Although MLO relies on the local and seasoned talents of singers, conductors, musicians, and artists, as well as others from all over the country, it also believes in its mission to promote new talents in the Miami opera scene. MLO provides opportunities that will aid a new performers preparation for other major venues by working alongside seasoned performers. Miami Lyric Opera has become a platform for enthusiastic opera singers, choristers, musicians and conductors throughout the nation.
MLO announces the close of the 2009 opera cycle with their production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen this coming September 24th and 26th at 8:00 p.m. at the Colony Theater on South Beach’s Lincoln Rd, featuring Metropolitan Opera house artists Sondra Kelly, Nelson Martinez, Roseanne Ackerley, Diego Baner, and others. However, the season will not be complete without the third consecutive free entrance production at the North Shore Open Space Park featuring a number of confirmed artists from around the world thanks to the sponsorship of the City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Cultural Development. This year, the company will perform L’elisir d’amore (Elixir of love) for all public.
MLO thanks the Miami public and embraces the symbiotic relationship between company and audience. This small and relatively new company has undertaken the great task of promoting the love for opera and instilling this as one of the major and popular Miami art forms.
