CIFO presents Being in the World

From Dec 2nd, 2009 through Mar 7th, 2010

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) will be presenting the exhibition Being in the World: Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, curated by Berta Sichel.

Being in the World is framed by the idea of situation as used by French philosopher, Jean-Paul Sartre.  In the last few years social critics have returned to Sartre’s ideas to explain the current mobility of people and ideas in a world where media technology and globalization constantly test our sense of place. The Sartrean situation, or position, is a sum of past experiences combined with present circumstances and the people surrounding us - close friends, acquaintances as well as those who pass by without being consciously noticed.  This exhibition proposes this as a useful model for understanding recent artworks which struggle with the individual in a changing world.

Being in the World will feature works by leading artists such as Bill Viola, Chantal Akerman, Francesca Woodman, Robin Rhode, Muntean/Rosenblum, among others.

Since 2000 Berta Sichel has been the director of the Department of Film and Video at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. In 2006, she selected the Reina Sofia’s historical video collection covering the period from l963-l986 and presented the exhibition First Generation: Art and Moving Image which was selected by the Spanish art critics among the three best exhibitions of the year in Spain.   During those years while living in Europe, Sichel extensively lectured in many countries (Germany, Italy, France and Portugal, among others) and organized international exhibitions both in Europe and in the United States. Her most recent curatorial projects include: Artpace Residence Program (2005) and Pratt Art Gallery, New York (2007).
