| Miami Art Museum Hosts Student Art Exhibition |
From Jan 24th through Feb 14th, 2010. Miami Art Museum presents the 2010 Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibition, featuring artworks by Miami-Dade County middle and high school students, from January 24th through February 14th, 2010. The annual exhibition, featuring artworks in all media including paintings, photographs, video and sculpture, starts with an awards ceremony on Sunday, January 24th, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. when school district officials will announce awards in each category as well as artworks and portfolios that will be submitted for national competition. “Miami Art Museum wants to give every Miami-Dade County student the opportunity to learn about art and visit the museum,” said Peter Boswell, Miami Art Museum assistant director of programs and senior curator. “The Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibition is a special component of MAM & Schools programming because it enables students to experience the museum as artists and allows the community to enjoy their artworks.” Miami Art Museum has the largest museum-based art education program in Miami-Dade County and the largest art program outside the school system. During the 2008-2009 school year, MAM & Schools increased its audience levels by 30 percent, serving nearly 13,000 participants through the museum’s free program: free buses to visit MAM, free guided museum tours for students and their teachers, free classroom visits, free support materials for teachers at Teacher Workshops, and more. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the longest running, largest and most prestigious student recognition program in the United States. Alumni include Andy Warhol, Donald Lipski and Zac Posen. The Awards offer students recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarship opportunities. Students from Miami-Dade County schools consistently rank among the top winners at the national level – setting records for the number of awards won by the students of a single school district. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have been conducted annually since 1923 to honor the creative achievements of students in seventh through twelfth grade and to recognize excellence in teaching. At the conclusion of this regional exhibition, top award-winning artworks are forwarded to the national competition in New York City. Works of art and writing are submitted from 80 regions across the United States. A distinguished panel of prominent artists, writers and arts professionals selects the national award recipients.
