Lucas Davidson's Agitations at Zadok Gallery

Sep 11, 2014

Davidson’s current series concerns his self-portrait. The video recordings and still photographs that result from his agitation process poetically document his own image in a constant state of flux. The series meditates upon the impermanence of the body and the fluidity of identity, while bringing a contemporary perspective to the historical yearning for artists to represent themselves.

His unique process of filming the separation of photographic emulsion from its paper backing interrogates the materiality of photography and the fragility of the human form, which is his consistent subject. By agitating the emulsion in water, photographs are lifted from their supports and repeatedly fold in upon themselves in a captivating, lyrical dance. Agitations will be Lucas Davidson’s first solo exhibition in the eastern United States.

Lucas Davidson was born in Newcastle, Australia in 1971. He received an MFA from Sydney College of the Arts of the University of Sydney in 2012 and has been included in exhibitions at several prestigious institutions including MOP Projects, Queensland Centre for Photography and Alaska Projects in Australia; and Kunstwork Sammlung Klein in Berlin, Germany. Davidson currently lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
