Magic in the Moonlight. Woody Allen returns to Coral Gables Cinema with romantic comedy

August 8 - August 14 , 2014

“To me there’s no real difference between a fortune teller or a fortune cookie and any of the organized religions. They’re all equally valid or invalid, really.” – Woody Allen

One of the world’s greatest living filmmakers, Woody Allen, fresh off his megahit Blue Jasmine, returns to the Gables Cinema beginning Friday, August 8, with his latest, Magic in the Moonlight. Set in the south of France during the 1920s, this romantic comedy with a “supernatural twist” tells the story of a master magician trying to expose a psychic medium as a fake. Magic in the Moonlight has a star-studded cast that includes Academy Award-winners Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and Marcia Gay Harden (Pollack), Academy Award-nominee Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) and the vivacious Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man).

Firth plays an egotistical Englishman who moonlights as a world famous Chinese conjurer but doesn’t actually believe in real magic, scoffing at those who claim to perform it. When he visits the French riviera to debunk a young clairvoyant played by Stone, his entire belief system comes crashing down. Her abilities seem to defy all rational explanation with what appear to be legitimate feats of mind-reading and other supernatural deeds. In Magic in the Moonlight, Allen revisits a number of his favorite themes and places, applying his surefire touch at romantic comedies-of-error.
