This hypnotic documentary explores the complex city of Lagos through the observations of award-winning architect and urban theorist Rem Koolhaas, as well as the residents themselves. The film will be screened three times to different audio: 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. commentary by Rem Koolhaas; 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. commentaries by residents of Lagos; 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. sounds of the city. Visitors are invited to drop in to enjoy one or all of the screenings, which is free with general museum admission.
Miami Art Museum’s screening of Lagos/Koolhaas is organized in conjunction with the exhibition Kimsooja: A Needle Woman on view at MAM through Sunday, August 26, 2012. The exhibition’s title is borrowed from the centerpiece of the exhibition, a multi-channel video installation that explores globalization’s impact on eight different cities throughout the world, one of which is Lagos. In each projection a lone figure stands motionlessly amid the frenetic energy of a densely populated urban center.
“The inclusion of Lagos in Kimsooja’s epic work is particularly elucidating,” said MAM Associate Curator René Morales. “With a population that will soon rival those of Tokyo and Mumbai, but with infrastructure that is straining under such accelerated growth, the Nigerian capital represents some of the most urgent dimensions of contemporary global urbanization. Like Kimsooja, Rem Koolhaas helps us understand these issues from a highly personal perspective, from the level of the street.”
