Miami City Ballet's First Annual Student Jazz Showcase

May 20 through 23 and Jun 3 and 4, 2011.

altDon’t miss your chance to see the future stars of the ballet world as students from Miami City Ballet School take the stage with two exciting programs: the Annual Student Showcase and Benefit May 20-23 and the first Annual Student Jazz Showcase June 3 and 4, 2011.

The Annual Student Showcase will be presented Friday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, May 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 22 at 2:00 p.m. The benefit performance on Monday, May 23 at 7p.m. features the students performing George Balanchine’s SWAN LAKE with music by Tchaikovsky. Benefit tickets are $100 and includes a post-performance reception with hor d’oeuvres, beverages and desserts.

MCB School’s advanced students (including those who danced with MCB as School Apprentices this past season) will perform an array of exciting and challenging works in the Student Showcase: George Balanchine’s one act version of Swan Lake, excerpts from two ballets by August Bournonville: “Pas de Six” from Act III of Napoli, a collection of lively dances that reflect the busy streets of Italy; dances from Le Conservatoire, technically intricate pieces danced with an ease and elegance reflective of the French School as Bournonville saw it and Slavonic Dances – a new ballet set to the music of Antonin Dvorak of the same title with choreography by MCB School faculty members Kimberly Sonderegger and Roberto Rodriguez.

“The Toby Lerner Ansin Scholarship” – created last year as a gift from the Ansin Family and the Ansin Foundation, to honor MCB’s co-founder, will be presented to one student by MCB School Director Linda Villella, and announced at the Student Showcase performances.

On Friday, June 4 and Saturday, June 5 at 7:00 p.m., the first Annual Student Jazz Showcase will feature MCB students performing an original jazz ballet choreographed by faculty members Rafi Maldonado-Lopez and Liz Malm. For many students, these performances will be their grand finale before entering careers as professional dancers at ballet companies around the nation, including MCB.
