Robert Kelley Lecture Series invites Dr. Philip Bohlman at Frost School of Music

Feb 19, 2016, 5 PM

Robert Kelley Memorial Musicology Lecture Series presents “Sacred Song and State in the Rise of Post-Secular Nationalism” by guest speaker: Dr. Philip Bohlman (distinguished Professor of Music and the Humanities, University of Chicago)

Sparked by the recent November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, Professor Philip Bohlman examines the use of song in twenty-first century nationalist movements. He reflects upon the relation of sacred song to moments of intense nationalism and the way that the secular and sacred often enter into open conflict at nationalist moments, graphically when in late 2015 France responded with “La marseillaise” to jihad.
