31st Annual Carbonell Awards

April 9th, 2007The 31st edition of the Annual Carbonell Award comes to South Florida again in conjunction with the South Florida Theater Festvival. The theme for this year’s award ceremony is a tribute to the often-unsung designers, stage managers and crews that make the magic of the performing arts possible. The awards ceremony is produced, directed and choreographed by Jean Ann Ryan and Jean Ann Ryan Productions, with musical direction by Peter Graves and The Peter Graves Orchestras, with guest artists. Highlights for this year’s award include the musicals The Tin Pan Alley Rag at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and The Full Monty staged by the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables. Also, the GableStage local premiere of the harrowing drama The Pillowman leads plays with six nominations together with the play Dealer’s Choice at Plantation’s Mosaic Theatre Company, the acerbic Edward Albee classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at Palm Beach Dramaworks, and the comedy romp Lend Me a Tenor at the Caldwell Theatre Company. Palm Beach theaters led with 48 nominations, followed by 41 for Miami-Dade. Broward troupes picked up 11. Winners will be announced during the awards gala night at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, in ceremonies that raise monies for scholarships for area arts students.
