Locust Projects

From Jan 10th through 28th, 2009.
Locust Projects. Miami ArtsOn Saturday, January 10th, Locust Projects kicks off the New Year with the opening reception for it’s first exhibition of 2009, in conjunction with the Wynwood Art District Walk. Part of the Locust Projects 10-year Anniversary Season, the show features three artists whose range reflects the diverse and experimental work for which the alternative artspace is renowned.

Miami’s Loriel Beltran, whose process art has captured increasing attention since his solo show at the Fredric Snitzer Gallery this fall, has created a site-specific installation of “labor paintings.” Not only has Beltran created works for Locust Projects, he has created them from Locust Projects by separating the paint from the drywall of the main room, then cutting the paint into thins strips that are stacked to form paintings.

"At the time I came up with the idea, I used to work very frequently at Locust, which means painting the walls all the time," said Beltran. "At some point I made a connection between the work I was doing in the studio, which was layering paint everyday to create paintings, and painting Locust’s walls."

In the Project Room, Mike Swaney who is originally from Vancouver but now lives in Barcelona, will be showing his project of sculptures created from objects found in and around the Biscayne Bay during his stay at The Fountainhead Residency.

"I particularly tried to keep the materials as they were found," said Swaney, "sometimes only painting them flat colors to make the individual sculptures work better. I equated making them to the way I though a caveman might take rocks, sticks, and plants from his surroundings to make ritualistic/ceremonial objects."

Also featured at Locust Projects is Christy Gast’s Moab Video Project. While spending time in rural Moab, Utah, Gast worked with a tiny local cable TV station to air artist videos interspersed with the regular community information and tourism programming.

Adapted for Locust Projects the Moab Video Project includes the original TV station content, bringing the project from the “motel room and living room audience” of the remote desert community into the art context of the gallery.

Amber Hawk Swanson and Matthew Sutton. From May 10th through June 28th, 2008.

Locust Projects. Miami Arts
Locust Projects is opening two solo exhibitions by Chicago-based artist Amber Hawk Swanson and Washington, DC-based artist Matthew Sutton. Amber Hawk Swanson commissioned the production of a life-like sex doll, a RealDoll, made of a PVC skeleton and silicone flesh, in her exact likeness. For her exhibition, “To Have, To Hold, and To Violate: Amber and Doll”, together with Amber Doll, Hawk Swanson disrupts the social codes of ritualized spaces by inserting her sexually available silicone replica into wedding receptions, tailgating parties, sorority houses, and theme parks. Sutton appeals to a different set of sensory experiences in his exhibition, “Febreze Scentstories” that asks viewers to respond in writing to their experience of smelling each strangely named scent.
