Box of Mental States. From Nov 22nd, 2008 through Jan 2009.  Art Rouge Gallery. Miami GalleriesArt Rouge Gallery presents Box of Mental States by artist Ciria. Ciria was born in Manchester, England and moved to Spain at an early age. In England, he was called the little Spaniard and in Madrid his nickname was the little Englishman.

Either way, he always felt like an "outsider." Art was, as it turned out, a way to fit in. At first he was comfortable creating figurative works but by the 80’s his style started to venture towards experiments in abstract nuances. Ciria moved to New York some years ago where he began from scratch, forcing himself to find another direction and a different way of being an artist. He soon felt freer and less encumbered by the weight of European artistic tradition. Today having achieved a new state, he produces highly emotional works that dramatically mesh figuration and abstraction, those two supposedly opposite poles of art.

Today his abstractions in the La Guardia Place series demonstrate the dominant, yet minimalistic uses of grays, blacks and whites, complimented by energetic splashes, lines and drippings of blood red pigments throughout his canvases.
Obsessed with Gaze, Ciria seems overly concerned with what others perceive in his works. His newest creations explore the compositional surfaces and tensions created by light and shadow. There is deception in the gaze, as well as a conscious reflection and hopefulness, that viewers will remove the superficial masks of life and search for the essential in his paintings. For all their control, these new works are among the wildest and most exhilarating paintings and drawings that he has ever done.

Naturally they share qualities with those of his past but they also radiate a different, more open spirit – just as he had hoped. He has often said that a painter always paints the same picture or that one always comes back to the same place. But the difference now is that he returns to the same place a more mature, sharper and experienced artist, which makes all the difference in the world.
