Arts at St. Johns. Summer 2006

From May through August, 2006Arts at St. John is opening its summer program with Art/Culture Transforming our Communities on May 30th, 2006.The panel discussion will be held at Miami Light Project, it is co-sponsored by Imagine Miami and Miami Beach Arts Trust and funded through a grant from Dade Community Foundation. The Introduction to the panel will be presented by Daniella Levine from Imagine Miami and Human Services Coalition. The moderator will be Dr. Carol Hoffman-Guzman, Director of Arts at St. Johns. The panel will be composed by Teo Castellanos from D-Projects, visual artist Xavier Cortada, Leslie Neal from ArtSpring, and Michael Rosenfeld from Youth Expressions. There will be also the opportunity to see a video clip from Teo Castellanos’ performance piece “NE 2nd Avenue.” This event is free and open to the public. Later on June 5th Arts at St. John will host Play Monday, Playreading: The Bald Soprano & The Lesson by Lonesco. On June 13th, Being Gay & Bicultural is a panel part of the series funded by the Florida Humanities Council (the state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.) The moderator will be David da Silva Cornell from the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, the panel will feature artist Sergio Baradat, writer and activist Kimberly Diehl, Editor of Express Newspaper Mubarak Dahir and Russell Roybal, from the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force. On June 20, Arts as Activism in the Gay Community will be panel discussion, also at Arts at St. Johns. Co-sponsored by Imagine Miami, Miami Beach Arts Trust, and Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. The moderator will be Steve Rothaus from the Miami Herald. In the panel Steve Atkins from the Gay & Lesbian Chamber, Gary Keating from Miami Gay Men’s Chorus, Cindy Brown from Miami Light Project, filmmaker Robert Rosenberg and activist/artist Bishop S.F. Ma-hee. On June 24, Arts at St. John will present Bible on Broadway which are wonderfully moving Broadway songs, influenced by Bible stories. July 11th opens the month with Arts Bridging Ethnicities and Cultures, a panel discussion at Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Funded by grants from Dade Community Foundation and the Florida Humanities Council. The moderator will be visual artist Pamela Palma. In the panel Andrea Seidel, Director of Intercultural Dance and Music Institute (INDAMI), Geoffrey Philp, a Jamaican author, writer, professor at Miami-Dade College North and Maguinha Machado, a Brazilian vocalist. On July 25th, Art/Culture Transforming Youth presents a panel discussion at Youth Expressions, NE 79th St. and NE 2nd Ave., Miami. Co-sponsored by Imagine Miami, Miami Beach Arts Trust. Funded through a grant from Dade Community Foundation. In the panel Michael Rosenfeld, Director of Youth Expressions, Jeff Carroll from RBG Promotions, and other panelists to be announced. On August 22n, Art/Culture Crossing Borders and Boundaries will be a panel discussion at Diaspora Vibe Gallery, 3938 N. Miami Ave., Design District. Funded by grants from Dade Community Foundation and the Florida Humanities Council The moderator will be Carol Hoffman-Guzman.
