ART@WORK Presents From the Religious to the Sacrilegious

Through April 6th, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 22

From the Religious to the Sacrilegious explores religious imagery and iconography culled from the Mosquera Collection.  Twenty five original works by twenty two contemporary artists are on display, featuring works on paper, paintings, photography, video and sculpture.

The artists represent diverse cultural backgrounds ranging from Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and the United States. This exhibit highlights works by the following artists:  Mario Algaze, Julio Antonio, Marcelo Bordese, María Brito, Amalia Caputo, Elizabeth Cerejido, Ana Albertina Delgado, Carlos de Villasante, Christian Duran, Natalya Laskis, Nicolás Leyva, Silvia Lizama, Eduardo Michaelsen, Vânia Mignone, Luis Mallo, Heriberto Mora, Charo Oquet, Miguel Ronsino, Pablo Soria, Leandro Soto, Miguel Von Dangel, and Ramón Williams.

The Mosquera Collection has a vast number of religious works due to their interest in religion that is part of the cultural heritage of many Latin American artists.  The Catholic Church, the Vatican and the Jesuits played major roles in the colonization of the New World and the conversion of native inhabitants to Christianity and, as such, provide a rich source of ideas and concepts for artistic exploration.  The syncretism of religion by mestizos and the black slaves who were brought from Africa provide another origin for artistic creativity.

Art@Work is located at Dr. Arturo F. Mosquera’s orthodontic office where he and his wife, Liza, have been showcasing exhibits of their collection, which they rotate on an annual basis, in addition to the individual artists’ solo exhibits in the lobby of the office that they host quarterly for the benefit of the patients of the practice, their family and the community at large.

The third opening reception for From the Religious to the Sacrilegious is Saturday, February 22, 2014, 7 – 9 pm and is free and open to the public.  The exhibition will be on view from May 29, 2013 through April 6th, 2014 weekdays from 11 am to 5 pm .

Free parking is available across the street at the Central Bible Assembly of God on opening night.
