Bass Museum. Where Do We Go From Here?

La Colección Jumex is one of the most significant private collections of contemporary art in Latin America. Housed in one of Grupo Jumex juice factories located in Mexico City, the collection holds more than 2000 pieces from Mexican and international artists. The Bass Museum on Miami Beach presents Where Do We Go From Here? Selections from La Colección Jumex.

The exhibition focuses on art as a cultural index, exploring the inter-generational nature of artists in the collection, as well as the cultural exchange produced between Mexican artist and their international counterparts. The exhibition has four sections: art about art; art and urban anthropology; text in art; and a series of artist profiles. This will be the first time that this collection is shown in the United States.

The concept of art about art explores the presence of Appropriation in the collection, including works in the exhibition that whether in a direct manner, as a part quotation or reference, raise issues about originality, authorship, gender, the boundaries of art and the mass media. In recent years, artists living and working in Mexico City have received international attention due to their engagement with their urban culture as an art laboratory. A diverse grouping of works are presented and read through this lens, including art by Francis Alÿs, Carlos Amorales, Minerva Cuevas, Daniel Guzmán, among others. Either for formal, conceptual or thematic reasons, artists such as Mike Bouchet, Stefan Bruggemann, Douglas Gordon, Joseph Kosuth, Jorge Mendez Blake or Jack Pierson embraced the use of text as lingua franca. Text in art is another section in the exhibition including flag works from the artists afore mentioned.

To round up the selection of works, the curatorial team proposes a series of specific profiles and spotlights of artists whose work is strongly represented in the holdings of the Jumex Collection. The last section of the exhibition, Artists Profiles, includes artists such as Fischli & Weiss, Louise Lawler, Paul McCarthy, Gabriel Orozco, Ugo Rondinone, and Rudolf Stingel. Where Do We Go From Here? Selections from La Colección Jumex will be on view to the public at the Bass Museum of Art from December 3rd, 2009 through March 14th, 2010. The exhibition is co-curated by Silvia Karman Cubina, Executive and Chief Curator of the Bass Museum of Art. A catalogue will be published on occasion of the exhibition.
