Carol Jazzar presents Collinear Points, a group exhibition of works by Rosemarie Chiarlone & Susan Weiner, Nyeema Morgan and Kathryn Zazenski which features texts as pictorial expression.
Miami based artist Rosemarie Chiarlone and poet Susan Weiner collaborate on works on paper in which words and phrases are inscribed into the paper surface by hand via needle puncture, both from the front and the back, which adds to the complexity of the marks. The maze-like arrangement of words causes their meanings – thoughts on connection and disconnection in personal relationships – to reflect back and forth on one another like an echo chamber, instead of following in the traditional left to right sentence structure. Chiarlone and Weiner have collaborated for 10 years, exhibiting works at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC; Center for the Book Arts in New York City; McMullen Museum of Art, Boston, Massachusetts; Spaces Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio; Fleet Library, Rhode Island School of Design; Pyramid Atlantic, Maryland; Girls Club and Biennes Museum of the Modern Book in Ft. Lauderdale; Art & Culture Center of Hollywood, the Arthur and Jaffe Center for Book Arts and the Schmidt Center Gallery, Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
Nyeema Morgan’s interdisciplinary work “explores the personal and cultural economy of knowledge through familiar artifacts.” Ten works from her series titled “Forty-Seven Easy Poundcakes Like grandma Use To Make” uses a rule-based drawing process to sequentially edit forty-seven variations on an “easy pound cake” recipe culled from Google searches. Morgan employs hand-drawn digital processes to ultimately produce small digital works that replace and negate ordinary instructions. Morgan, a graduate of the Cooper Union School of Art and California College of the Arts, is based in New York. She has been a resident artist at Abrons Art Center, Aljira: A Center for Contemporary Art as well as attending the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has exhibited her works at Artspace, New Haven, CT; Art in General, New York, NY; Galerie Jeanroch Dard, Paris; The Bindery Projects, St. Paul, MN and the South Hill Park Arts Centre, Bracknell, UK.
Kathryn Zazenski will exhibit two large-scale drawings that exemplify the artist’s strategy of observing the relationship between emotion and language as well as other methods of communication. Five hundred of the most common and five hundred of the least common words used in the English language are depicted as black bands, blocks and line segments placed at intervals along parallel lines. Her works exposes new views of quotidian symbols in both physical and psychological space. Zazenski is based in Philadelphia and is currently getting her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has exhibited her work in various galleries across the US and abroad and was selected for the Fountainhead Residency of Miami in 2012.
