Choral Music of the Civil War

April 6 and 7, 2013.

The University of Miami Collegium Musicum, under the direction of Dr. Donald Oglesby, will present a concert of Choral Music of the Civil War. The Collegium Musicum is a long-standing choral ensemble associated with the University of Miami which has received acclaim for its performances in conjunction with the Miami Bach Society.

As we mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, there has been a resurgence of interest in the history of the period. This program will explore some of the music sung then and the emotions expressed, from patriotism to desperation and pathos, and some lighter moments. Two pieces sung on either side of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address have been found and will be sung at these concerts; it is likely that this music has not been performed since the ceremony in which Lincoln spoke his memorable words.

There will be two performances: The first will be at Riviera Presbyterian Church, 5275 Sunset Drive in Miami on April 6, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. The second will be at First United Methodist Church, 400 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami on April 7, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. General Admission tickets will be available at the door for $10.00; $5.00 for Students.
