Damali Abrams’ Self-Help TV Project

From Jan 2nd through Apr 2nd, 2010.

LOGO Projects in conjunction with Ocean Ophthalmology Group presents five videos from Damali Abrams’ ongoing Self-Help TV project. For the past year Abrams has been developing videos for her fictional television network Self-Help TV. An admitted self-help and television addict Abrams employs a range of televisual formats including comedy, drama, and reality to create a space for healing in these trying and uncertain times. Says the artist about her work, “Mainstream self-help tends to ignore how factors such as race, class and gender might affect one’s overall well-being.  However, as a woman of color it is important to me to make visible in these forms people like me, who are rarely represented. At the same time I intend for this work to be universal, to subtly engage viewers in the space where we all feel alienated, out-of-place or unsure.”

This installation marks Self-Help TV’s premier incorporation into a professional, medical setting. Self-Help TV programs will take over the office waiting room and even usurp the digital eye charts in each of the patient exam rooms.  We are excited to witness the collision of the art world with the professional world in this truly unique collaboration – the ultimate blend of state-of-the-art western medical care and Abrams’ own brand of holistic healing!

Damali Abrams is a Guyanese-American interdisciplinary artist working in video, performance, mixed media, poetry and collage.  She received her BA at New York University and her MFA at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her work can be viewed online at: http://damaliabrams.blip.tv/
