David Castillo Gallery. Gallery Projects

From May 8th through Jun 5th, 2010.

altDavid Castillo Annex is currently presenting Gallery Projects, with works by gallery artists Adler Guerrier, Aramis Gutierrez, Quisqueya Henriquez, Susan Lee-Chun, Pepe Mar, Glexis Novoa, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Frances Trombly, and Wendy Wischer.  In a new body of collages, Quisqueya Henriquez joins various pieces of Caribbean architecture to create works of abstract geometry. Susan Lee-Chun re-introduces Sue through a montage of rehearsals, conducted to the point of obsession. Sue meticulously perfects her presentation to ensure her brand, as an All-American blonde, is “authentic”.

Frances Trombly has created a woven canvas that begs to be used. In the same way Trombly lets art imitate life, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova continues his new functional pieces with a chair piece. The legs of the work are interrupted by a wooden pedestal that, ironically, can also be used for seating. Adler Guerrier’s work explores the commonplace nature of everyday; his two-part sculpture creates a contemplative dialogue within itself.  In homage to the 80’s, Aramis Gutierrez has painted a portrait of model Petty Kelly, from Robert Palmer’s iconic music video; the artist has rendered the model to represent a realization of childhood illusions. Pepe Mar’s new works continue to derive inspiration from the extravagant. In his series of “enormous” heads, Mar evokes both museum bronze busts and primitive tribal “heads,” at once regal and grotesque.
