Books and Books starts their 25th anniversary celebration with a Latin Jazz concert that honors a legend and introduces a new star. Renowned violinist Federico Britos will perform with the young jazz bass sensation Esperanza Spalding, plus other special guests, at the Manuel Artime Theater in Miami.
Winner of several Grammy awards for his work with Charlie Haden and Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Federico Britos is regarded as a titan of the violin. A native of Uruguay, he has served as principal chair, soloist, and ultimately Concertmaster with some of the great symphony orchestras of Uruguay, Venezuela, Peru, Cuba and United States. He has also performed with jazz legends Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole and many others. While living in Uruguay, he performed alongside many visiting Brazilian artists including Vinicius de Moraes. Federico Britos later lived in Cuba and is unofficially credited with introducing bossa nova to the island. Books and Books is honored to present this celebration of Federico Britos’ career spanning 50 years of beautiful music.
Joining Federico on stage will be a bright new star in the jazz world, the bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding, making her Florida debut. The Portland, Oregon native was widely hailed as a child prodigy on the double bass since she first began performing on the imposing instrument as a 15-year-old. Now 23, she balances a hectic schedule as a teacher at Boston’s prestigious Berkelee College of Music with performances with her own group and a host of jazz icons. She has performed many of the world’s leading jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals. Among the special guests who will be joining Federico is his friend David Sanchez, a Grammy-award winning saxophonist.
