Florida Grand Opera presents Tango/María de Buenos Aires

A product of the hghly acclamed, lvng Amercan composer Robert Xaver Rodrguez, Tango s a one-act comc concert operetta composed for a sngle tenor role, sung by Young Artst Matthew Newln, and a chamber ensemble. Desgned to present three consecutve scenes wthout pause, the acton follows the protagonst at the heght of the tango craze n 1913 as he embodes dfferent characters to convey the vared perceptons of ths seductve and polarzng dance.

Set n Argentna, the surreal plot of Argentnean composer Ástor Pazzolla’s Maŕa de Buenos Ares s the tale of ll-fated Maŕa, who was sad to be born “on a day when God was drunk.” Lvng n the poor suburbs of Buenos Ares, Maŕa s seduced by the sounds of tango, becomng a streetwalker, and fallng vctm to a tragc death. The audence then follows Maŕa’s Shadow as t walks the cty’s Underground, whch has become her hell.

Ths tango double bll s the frst nstallment of the “Unexpected Operas n Unexpected Places” ntatve, a program supported by the John S. and James L. Knght Foundaton as part of ts Knght Arts Challenge and desgned to brng less-known operas to unque venues throughout South Florda.
