Oct 25th, 2:00 pm

Experience a quintessential Caribbean percussion tradition! Join the 21st Century Steel Band for a steel pan (steel drum) concert. Learn about the history and cultural importance of this Trinidadian musical style. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, steel bands feature percussion instruments called “pans,” which are expertly crafted from oil drums. The 21st Century Steel Band is one of South Florida’s finest examples of these ensembles. Founded in 1978, this band has performed at festivals, cultural programs, and Carnivals worldwide and is led by pan maker and player Michael Kernahan, winner of the 2005 Florida Folk Heritage Award.

This program is presented by the HistoryMiami South Florida Folklife Center as part of the Heritage Spotlight series, an artist-in-residence program that features local traditional artists and cultural expressions. The Heritage Spotlight is presented with the supported of Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council and Division of Historical Resources, the Knight Foundation, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
