Tracers is an electronic music piece using a process of digitally tracing pre-existing recordings to extract control data. For his Fringe Projects performance, Ben traces recordings of a Cuban drum ensemble demonstrating traditional Santeria rhythms. The control data extracted from these rhythmic patterns are fed into a number of synthesizing systems to create disjunctive dance tracks.
Ben Vida, b. 1974 lives and works in New York. His work has been presented extensively throughout N. America, Japan, Australia and Europe at such institutions as the Guggenheim, New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Institute of Contemporary Art, London; Audio Visual Arts, New York; Leap Gallery, Berlin; The Artist’s Institute, New York; the Sydney Opera House, among others.
