Maria Lino Drawn Stitches, 2011 Multi-channel video installation dimensions variable, Courtesy of the ArtistThe Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents This and That: Unconventional Selections from the Permanent Collection and Shared Threads: Maria Lino’s Portrait of a Shipibo Healer, on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. during Target Wednesday After Hours. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

This and That: Unconventional Selections from the Permanent Collection presents works which, at first glance, may seem somewhat unconventional, either through the artist’s treatment of materials or subject matter. These works, which can be complex, mysterious, irreverent or fun, will challenge visitors to reconsider their perceptions of what art is, to stimulate a response and question meanings. The exhibition, selected from the Museum’s permanent collection, features artworks in a wide range of media by artists such as Guerra de la Paz, Pepe Mar, Jillian Mayer, Bert Rodriguez and Graham Hudson. The exhibit, curated by Klaudio Rodriguez, runs through October 21, 2012.

Shared Threads: Maria Lino’s Portrait of a Shipibo Healer is a collaborative experience where two artists from vastly different cultures and artistic traditions came together in the Amazon region, in Pucallpa, Peru. The results are an extraordinary multi-media integration of tradition, design and technique in a soulful exchange of knowledge, the majority of which occurred over the course of ten intensive days of collecting video footage in Pucallpa.

Maria Lino has twice been named a Cintas Fellow and, in 2011, was awarded a Fulbright US Scholar Grant and spent eight months working in Peru on an ongoing series of video portraits; Shared Threads is part of this larger work and includes a selection of Shipibo textiles. The exhibit, curated by Ana Estrada and sponsored by Latino Magazine, runs through September 30, 2012.
