altAlong with his critically renowned quintet, Cuban Grammy awarded pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba will be performing compositions from his latest CD Avatar on a one of a kind presentation at the EBS Auditorium on March 18th at 8:pm.

As one of jazz’s most imaginative and virtuosic pianists, Rubalcaba has explored a range of music in his nearly two-decade recording career. Avatar is a compilation of tunes mainly composed the his bandmates: remarkable musicians that he has come to know along his career but never actually got to share stage with. Only one tune is Rubalcaba’s original. The night of the 18th promises a torrent of Rubalcaba’s  remarkable sensitivity toward the musical traditions from which he emerged and later embraced. As one of the most significant figures to emerge from Afro-Cuban jazz in the ’90s, Rubalcaba is an extraordinarily versatile pianist able to blend disparate strands of Cuban and American jazz traditions into a fresh, modern whole. Born into a musical family in Havana, By the time he arrived on the international jazz stage in the late ’80s he was widely considered one of the great virtuosos of the instrument.
