Modern design retailer KMP Furniture has forged a new partnership with The American Institute of Architects (AIA). Executive Director of AIA, Mike Brazlavsky appointed the Miami-Dade county furniture store to an official affiliation with the organization’s Miami Chapter.
The January 2010 appointment is in line with KMP’s mission to promote emerging talent in the fields of art, architecture and design. In addition to selling high-end contemporary furniture at competitive prices, KMP regularly hosts events at its Upper Eastside showroom that feature contemporary art and artists. In December of 2009 the store held an art show called “Mediterranean Visions” featuring the work of Greek artists Andreas Caralambous, Doros Irakleous, and Stavros Antonopoulos.
Such events, as well as the company’s reputation for investing in improvements for its surrounding neighborhood, snagged the attention of the AIA, who approached KMP about the affiliation. The new partnership will broaden the furniture store’s scope in bringing the local community and architecture professionals together by way of more events and co-sponsored publications.
According to the organizations Website, AIA Miami stresses “public awareness and appreciation of architecture and its related fields.” The chapter hopes to facilitate the emergence of Miami and the South Florida region “as a vibrant and diverse community, where architecture and design play a vital role.”
KMP owner Matheos Matheou is leading the charge to make his store, which also retails online, about more than just furniture. He says his vision is to make KMP into a “learning tool with resources for everyone.” To this end, teaming with the AIA, whose members enjoy industry education and networking events, is precisely in line with the company’s goals.
According to Matheou, KMP is always looking for new avenues for expansion. One of the company’s latest projects is the development of the largest database of architects and designers in the world.
