Magic can happen anywhere… even in the Amazon!

Inspired by the writings of the great Gabriel García Márquez (One Hundred Years of Solitude), and Mexican composer Daniel Catán, Florida Grand Opera will premiere Florencia en el Amazonas (Florence in the Amazon), which is considered one of the most lyrical and melodious new operas of the past 30 years, embraced by critics and audiences everywhere it has played. This story of a Brazilian soprano’s emotionally fraught journey back to her homeland offers a brilliant display of magical realism—and pushes the operatic form to new limits of imagination.

Florencia Grimaldi is a famous soprano on a journey to sing at the opera house in Manaus, Brazil. She hopes that her performance will attract her lover Cristóbal, a butterfly hunter who has disappeared into the rainforest. She boards the steamboat El Dorado for a trip down the Amazon River, along with several passengers who, unaware of her identity, are also traveling to Manaus to hear the great Grimaldi sing.

Grammy Award® winner Ana María Martínez is considered to be one of the foremost sopranos of her time, with an international career that spans the world’s most important opera houses and concert halls. With a repertoire that encompasses opera’s most intriguing and diverse leading ladies, she engages her audiences season after season with signature roles, spellbinding debuts, and a myriad of captivating recordings such as her role as Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, a role which she also performed in Florida Grand Opera’s 2007-08 season.
