Mar 13th and 14th, 2009. 8:30 p.m. Marie Chouinard is a choreographer who cannot be mistaken for anyone else. Her Montreal-based company has received worldwide acclaim for its angular, startling and moving dance works. The weekend of March 13th and 14th they make a return to Miami Beach's Colony Theatre with two outstanding pieces that showcase Chouinard's unique and distinctive style.
These concerts, presented by Tigertail Productions, feature a startling reworking of the classic The Rite of Spring, with Igor Stravinsky´s powerful score and additional new music from Rober Racine. In the piece Chouinard, through sensual, almost primal choreography, mines the intimate mysterious depths of each of her dancers. The totem-like costumes that echo the animal world in its violence and beauty add to the dance's vivid effect. The Rite of Spring is preceded by the short solo work Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, with music by Claude Debussy. The evening contains nudity.
"Marie Chouinard's electrifying choreography and amazing company of dancers are a treat for the imagination and the soul. This outstanding Canadian company tours throughout the world. We are fortunate to be able to bring them to Miami," says Tigertail Productions' Executive Director Mary Luft. The non-profit Tigertail Productions is a South Florida leader in innovative cultural work.
Now a fixture on the world's major stages and at international festivals, Compagnie Marie Chouinard has its roots in Chouinard's solo work, which began back in 1978. Her over fifty productions, action-performances, vocal works, installations and films earned her a reputation for daring originality. She refined her lifelong interest in formal research and the human body, going on to form her own dance company in 1990. Through her choreography Chouinard has explored the "poetics of the body" in immediate, intelligible and ever-surprising ways.
