Matta: A Retrospective at Gary Nader Fine Art

From Dec 4th, 2009 through Jan 30th, 2010

Gary Nader presents Matta: A Retrospective, showcasing an outstanding selection of works by the Chilean Master. This show will focus on the formative years of his career, particularly the decades of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s, the moment when the artist created his signature pieces, and personal aesthetical discourse; along with pieces from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, and some others created by the end of his long and prolific career.

By targeting every significant moment of Matta’s creation, the exhibit will examine his major influences of artists from of all regions and times. Starting in 1938, his work was very much influenced by Andre Breton and his capital premise of “pure psychic automatist”. This concept defined the Surrealistic movement and generated Matta’s inquietude of experimenting on introspective sociological themes. This is the moment when the artist produced his monumental Physical Morphology, abstract pieces that appear as ethereal states of minds. The artist’s distinctive perception of reality includes exercises of the psyche where diffuse light patterns on a featureless backdrop translate to the canvas through vibrant and elegant compositions. The paintings are fragile spaces where delicate lines and brushstrokes converge as particles of a very unique spatial universe.

Throughout the years, Matta’s work suffered notable variations and the show intends to demonstrate these distinctions. The 40’s when his notions of the surreal turned to the Pre-Columbian themes, and his way of expression became more violent and obscure; and then the 50’s and 60’s when the luminosity appears translated through vital shapes and forms. This is Gary Nader’s fourth One Man Show of Matta.
