MDC Student Wins Poetry Contest Sponsored by the Consulates of France and Haiti

April 2013.

Miami Dade College (MDC) InterAmerican Campus announced that student Mercedes Ramos won first place in the internationally recognized Dis-moi dix mots! poetry contest.

Ramos’ poem, titled L’Unique, centers on two people’s interpretation of a bouquet of flowers, and illustrates how personal perception gives people a unique quality.

Contest entrants were given 10 French words to include in their poems. Upon learning of her win, Ramos said, “I was completely surprised.” A novice poet who will earn her associates degree this May, she took French I this semester and was encouraged to enter the contest by her teacher.

The poetry competition is observed worldwide in honor of “French Language and Francophone Week,” held in March.

“We are so pleased that one of ours has been acknowledged for the beauty and style of her work,” said Dr. Michelle Thomas, chair of MDC’s ESOL and Foreign Languages Department at the InterAmerican Campus.
