Miami Arts Charter School opened in August

A new performing arts and creative writing charter school opened its doors in Miami’s Design District in August of 2009. Though many schools are anticipating cuts to arts education in Miami-Dade, this school seeks to offer everything a student could need to test their creative abilities while enjoying a first-rate academic education.
Licensed through the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the new charter school will consist of a 6-12 feeder program for students in the arts. The Miami Arts Charter School will be housed in the landmark building that is the former home of local ABC TV station WPLG Channel 10, located at 3900 Biscayne Boulevard.

The 52,000 square foot facility will provide state-of-the-art academic and fine arts programs. The school will house administrative and academic suites in addition to music and dance rehearsal halls. The facility will also boast creative writing areas and ample room for visual arts classes. Through a career academy Florida grant program available only to new charter schools cooperating with universities, Miami Arts will offer a special music production and recording academy that includes instruction in music recording studio techniques.

Students at Miami Arts Charter School will benefit from advanced private and small group arts lessons taught by outstanding staff from the University of Miami Frost School of Music through a developing cooperative effort. During school building renovations, student auditions for all areas will take place on the campus of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music in Coral Gables. Cognizant of the demand for arts education and anticipating a high level of community interest, Miami Arts has opened its application process for placement into the school’s major arts areas.

In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, students select to explore a principal art area from instrumental or vocal music, visual art, dance and creative writing/acting.

“We have waited for this new school with great anticipation, which will enhance the city’s students’ academic and arts experiences,” said Alfredo de la Rosa, the school’s founder. “We have great expectations for Miami Arts and appreciate the tremendous support we have received from the community,” de la Rosa said.
