Miami-Dade County Auditorium and FUNDarte presents Macho Man XXI by Tania Pérez-Salas Dance Company on Saturday, May 4 at 8:30pm and Sunday, May 5 at 3pm. With a sense of humor and intense physical imagery, Macho Man XXI tackles the effects of gender violence taking place in the chaotic, surreal and exotic culture of Mexico. In riveting and craftily gender-coded dance, the powerful and daring work pulls up fear by its roots, revealing the submissive and perverted state of this social legacy, ever apparent in the media, contemporary beauty standards and their underlying violence.
Tania Pérez-Salas began dancing in her native Mexico City. After studying dance for fifteen years, she obtained significant recognition as a dancer and choreographer in the Mexican dance scene and founded her own company in 1994. She trained with one of Mexico’s leading contemporary dance teachers, Xavier Francis, and has since worked in dance, theater, and feature films as an actress, dancer, and choreographer.
The Mexico City–based troupe has been invited to the most prestigious festivals in the world such as the Latin American Dance Festival in Montreal, the Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, the East-West Festival of Italy, the Cervantino International Festival, the New York Fall For Dance Festival City Center Theater, The Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the Solo and Duets Festival of Venezuela, the Shanghai International Festival, in China, the Galway Arts Festival, in Ireland, the Tel-Aviv Dance Festival in Israel and the Iberomix Festival of the Kennedy Center and Celebrity Series of Boston.
Each work of Tania Pérez-Salas is derived from personal experience, and nourished by her love for literature, cinema, philosophy and the visual arts. In addition to Macho Man XXI, which premiered in 2016 at Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, her other works include Invocations, inspired by the poetry of Vicente Huidobro; The Slave, inspired by the work of writer Isaac Bashevis Singer; dimensions of death and life in Visitor; and the exploration of femininity, inspired by Virginia Woolf’s The Hours. Tania Pérez-Salas Dance Company will perform Macho Man XXI on Saturday, May 4 at 8:30pm and Sunday, May 5 at 3pm at Miami-Dade County Auditorium, 2901 W Flagler St. Miami, FL 33135.
