The New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), will close its 20th Anniversary Season with a celebratory performance on Saturday, May 3rd, at 8:00 p.m., featuring Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas and 20 NWS alumni at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, located at 1300 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami.
The returning NWS alumni will perform not as soloists, but alongside current New World Symphony Fellows in Act III from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, resulting in a more than 100 musician-orchestra for this performance. Both selections are masterpieces of Russian ballet music; the Tchaikovsky work is famous for Romantic elegance, while the Stravinsky work, which incited riots at its premiere in 1913, is now a 20th-century classic featured in numerous pop-culture media, including Disney’s Fantasia.
Returning alumni include Marisela Sager, assistant principal flutist with The Cleveland Orchestra; Shawn Weil, violinist with the St. Louis Symphony; Kari Docter, cellist with the Metropolitan Opera; and Lori Wike, principal bassoonist with the Utah Symphony. Michael Linville, NWS Vice President for Musician Advancement, Dean of Musicians and an NWS alumnus, believes the process of bringing back former fellows is a meaningful celebration of the academy’s accomplishments: “All of the alumni who are coming to Miami for this performance are really excited to return to NWS, and look forward to once again working with Michael Tilson Thomas. This experience will also be very beneficial for current NWS fellows; they get to work with musicians who are members of the orchestras they’re auditioning for right now.”
