Paraphernalia at Bakehouse Art Complex

From Dec 4th, 2008 through Jan 25th, 2009.  Bakehouse Art Complex. Miami ArtThe Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC) announces the opening of Paraphernalia: a nationally juried exhibition. Curated by Carol Damian, Director of the Frost Museum; Peter Boswell, Chief Curator at the Miami Art Museum; and Bernice Steinbaum, Owner and Director of the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery. The exhibition will be on display from December 4th, 2008 through January 25th, 2009. The opening reception will be held on December 4th, 2008 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.

The word paraphernalia has evolved over time. What is now loosely defined as “equipment, apparatus or furnishing used in or necessary for a particular activity”, historically referred to a bride’s property beyond her dowry. Paraphernalia as a word has taken a new connotation and has become more intertwined with the realm of taboo. Paraphernalia is a means to an end, and is applicable in almost every aspect of life.

The humorous, historical, political and personal aspects of the word or idea of “paraphernalia” is explored in the paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, video and photography in this nationally juried exhibition. Artists include; Tristan Fitch, Leanne Hemmingway-Siebels, Moira Holoham, Jill Hotchkiss, Stephen Barron Johnson, Kathy Kissik, Cyriaco Lopes, Mario Marinoni, Luisa Mesa, Deborah M. Mitchell, Daniel Ortiz, Tere Pastoriza, Randy Polumbo, Susan Radau, Rosemarie Romero, Angelika Rothkegel, Tina Salvesen, Anica Shpilberg, Jose Pacheco Silva, Loren Squire, Kikuko Tanaka, and Ramon Williams.
