Sculpture Key West

From December 1, 2012 through March 23, 2013.

Twenty-two contemporary sculptures and two performances are planned to enhance the land and seascapes around two historic Civil War era forts during the 17th annual Sculpture Key West exhibition. Set for December 1 through March 23, 2013, the open-air exhibition spotlights the talent of international, national and local artists on the subtropical island known for its flourishing arts community.

Among the projected highlights of the 2012/2013 exhibition are a steel and wood skeletal structure that is part animal, ship, airplane and sleigh, a massive monumental concrete relic of a shell from a world unknown, a mysterious array of manhole covers that seem to melt in the sun and the long awaited Overseas Heritage Trail Unicycle Tour!

SKW Board Member Emily Sorkin, of the former Emily Sorkin Gallery, Tribeca, New York City, directed the exhibition selection. Sculptures are slated for display beginning Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, located beyond the southern end of Southard Street and Saturday, December 8, 2012 at The Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower, located on Atlantic Boulevard by White Street.

A variety of natural materials, found and recycled objects will be used in the construction of many of the site-specific installations that depend on their settings to provide meaning or context to the work. Many notable works will be constructed on-site, incorporating their environments, and will exist only until the exhibition’s end.

Artists from Germany, the U.S Virgin Islands and 7 American states are to showcase their work at the innovative outdoor exhibition. As in past years, participating artists include leaders in the national and international sculpture world. The artists are Nellie Appleby, Susan Bailey, William Bennett, Richard Brachman, Tyler Buckheim, Ursula Clark, Carrie Daigle, Tebelio Diaz, Robert Hickman, Gereon Krebber, Thea Lanzisero, Jennifer Martin, John Martini, Creighton Michael, Keith Nelson, Christopher Newman, Jim Racchi, Marek Ranis, Bonnie Rychlak, Jacquelyn Sanchez, Jiwan Noah Singh, William Thompson, Vera Vasek and Bill Wood.

Champagne Artist Receptions will be held on Saturday, December 1st from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, and on Friday, December 7th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at The Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower.

A special reception to celebrate the arrival of the Overseas Heritage Trail Unicycle Tour will be held Sunday, December 9th from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the channel Tiki hut, Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. The Sculpture Key West 17th Exhibition is dedicated to the spirit, vision and memory of the island’s major patron of the arts, Susan Mesker.
