WordSpeak Open Mic and Slam for teens, hosted by George Yamazawa. This is an opportunity for teens to read and perform their poetry, as well as to experience George’s performance work. There is no charge to attend but each participant must be between 13 and 19 years old. No reservations are needed. Those interested in the Open Mic and Slam must register at the event between 5:00 and 6:00 pm at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens.
Born and raised by Japanese immigrants in Durham, North Carolina, George Masao Yamazawa, Jr., or "G", didn’t always have it easy growing up. Other kids made fun of the shape of his eyes or called him Chinese. His relationship with his strict father wasn’t always easy. His best friend passed away when he was in junior high. After he was expelled from school at age 16, George began to explore his family’s religion, Buddhism, more deeply to help fight his depression.
