Sleepless Night 2009

November 7th, 2009.

Don’t sleep on it. The alarms have been set and the countdown has begun. Sleepless Night 2009 will no doubt be the largest multi-genre arts and cultural event of the year this country has ever experienced. The free, 13-hour arts and entertainment extravaganza will awaken on Saturday, November 7th, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. and stimulate your senses through the next morning at 7:00 a.m.

In its first year, Sleepless Night drew over 100,000 insomniacs that awed at the offerings held during the all-night cultural party. This year, 200,000 attendees are expected. Street spectacles, acrobatics, film, comedy, dance, indoor and outdoor installations and more will be offered for free. More than 130 events in more than 100 locations spread throughout four zones, from Ocean Drive to Normandy Fountain.

This year it will feature virtual reality live animation performances, digital nightscape graffiti, interactive three-screen manipulated films, musical marionettes, a pajama run, helium-balloon acrobats, a flash mob dance, and much more.

“Sleepless Night boosts the local arts landscape and draws visitors from around the world for a night of unforgettable performances,” said Ileigh Reynolds, artistic director of Animate Objects Physical Theater. In the first year, her theater group amazed spectators with the debut of their aerial dance on the Bass Museum’s exterior south wall. Animate Objects will again be performing this year. “Where else in the county can arts patrons and new audiences get a sampling of so many free events?” continued Reynolds.

Free shuttle buses with onboard artistic programming will connect the various zones of activity. From north to south, there will be something for every audience to enjoy and be awed, amazed and amused throughout the sleepless night.

If catching a nap will help you get through the night, the Catalina Hotel and Beach Club, the official hotel sponsor, will be offering specials.  “You won’t have to miss any action.

Each of the Catalina’s three buildings will be participating by showcasing a wide array of pop art installations and an all-night unplugged live music line-up. Even our sister hotel, the Riviera South Beach, located a few blocks away will be showcasing a collection of art by NeoPop Artist Ed King,” said Linsey Harris, general manager of The Catalina Hotel & Beach Club.

SoBe Arts brings Sleepless Night to a colorful close with “Tunes and Toons,” a pre-dawn extravaganza of classic cartoons and live music. Across the street at the Park Central Hotel, a yoga class will be held to the sounds of an Earth Harp. And, Whole Foods will replenish audiences with some nutrients at dawn. It’s the perfect way to start the day – or end the night!

Sleepless Night is patterned after White Nights (Nuit Blanche) cultural series held across Europe (Paris, Rome, Madrid, and Brussels) and Toronto. Get your rest now, Sleepless Night 2009 is ready to be awakened and is guaranteed to make you dream for more.
