Summer Cabaret Concert Series at The Deering Estate

Sat, Jul 25 & Sat, Aug 29

The Deering Estate’s Summer Cabaret Concert Series features intimate concerts inside the historic Stone House Ballroom. The concert on Saturday, July 25th will feature LeNard Rutledge and the concert on Saturday, August 29th will feature Dr. Ed Calle.

Saturday, July 25th featuring LeNard Rutledge

LeNard Rutledge, born and raised in Miami, is usually compared, aptly, to the legendary Lou Rawls. Like Rawls, Rutledge’s classy elegance is often permeated by the raw passion of his church choir work. In fact Rutledge still sings with the choir at The Church of The Incarnation.

Rutledge began not as a vocalist but as a drummer, playing in the marching band at Miami Central Senior High, and later making his income during college, in North Carolina, playing at local clubs. He began his vocal career in 1997, when he was asked to join the famed Melton Mustafa Orchestra. LeNard was the featured vocalist for Melton Mustafa for seven years. In 2002 Rutledge was introduced to the music director of Miami’s Van Dyke Café, Don Wilner, who immediately recognized Rutledge’s talent and began giving him regular performance dates. LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Kenny Drew Jr., Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kirk Whalum, Marion Meadows and the late George Duke.

Saturday, August 29th featuring Dr. Ed Calle

Dr. Ed Calle is known for his extraordinary ability to play bebop, Latin and contemporary jazz, and pop. Born in Caracas of Spanish parents, it was obvious from the start that he was a natural player and now, Calle is one of the most recorded saxophonists in history, featured on more than 1,100 CDs both as a sideman and soloist. He appears on Grammy-award-winning albums by Frank Sinatra, Arturo Sandoval, Juan Luis Guerra, Vicky Carr, and Jon Secada as well as on numerous television and motion picture soundtracks. Calle has also recorded and performed around the world with such artists as Arturo Sandoval, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Lenny Kravitz, Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Juanes, Michael Bolton, Natalie Cole, Bob James, Raul DiBlasio, Bobby Caldwell, Rhianna, Extreme, and Vanessa Williams. Among his many solo recordings, Ed Calle Plays Santana garnered a Latin Grammy Award nomination in 2005. His live CD In the Zone (2006) features original compositions and jazz standards and earned a Latin Grammy nomination in 2007.
