The Blue Angel (Der blaue Engel)

Miami Beach Cinematheque. Feb 14th, 2010. 8:00 p.m.

The Miami Beach Cinematheque and Romance in A Can Film Festival present the film The Blue Angel (Der blaue Engel) this Valentines Day at 8:00 p.m. Directed by Joseph Von Sternberg in 1930, the film features Marlene Dietrich and Emil Jannings. Based on Heinrich Mann’s novel Professor Unrat, The Blue Angel is considered to be the first major German sound film and it brought world fame to actress Marlene Dietrich. In addition, it introduced her signature song, Friedrich Hollaender’s “Falling in Love Again (Can’t Help It)”.

The film is an exquisite parable of one man’s fall from respectability, presented in the restored version from KINO International. German expressionist actor Emil Jannings stars as the repressed instructor of a boys’ prep school. After learning of his pupils’ infatuation with a local nightclub songstress, he finds himself seduced by the siren Lola Lola (Dietrich). Consumed by desire, he is dragged down a path of personal degradation. Lola’s unrestrained sexuality thrust Dietrich to the forefront of the sultry leading ladies who were challenging the limits of screen sexuality.
