The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU presents Artworks!, the fourth annual student art therapy exhibit. The Frost Art Museum, the Miami Dade County Public Schools Clinical Art Therapy Department, and the New Life Family Center have united to present cultural support of art as a healing process. The opening reception will be on February 22, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
ArtWorks! is an educational outreach program that provides art education to children with Emotional-Behavioral Disorders (E/BD). Clinical art therapists have designed ArtWorks! in collaboration with museum staff in effort to help transform the lives of at-risk children through art. This year’s exhibition theme, The Art of Relationship Building, challenges students to create a visual narrative on paper panels, which are hung together to create a quilt. By telling their stories, the students discover how their relationships have affected them while exploring and reconciling emotional conflicts. Students and teachers are provided guided tours and workshops related to the subject, The Art of Relationship Building.
The Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Clinical Art Therapy Program is dedicated to helping at-risk students reach their maximum cognitive and emotional potential through the vehicle of creative expression. M-DCPS clinical art therapists develop and promote knowledge in the field of school art therapy and serve exceptional students through this dynamic approach. The New Life Family Center provides housing for 15 families in transition from homelessness to stabilization. Using Art Therapy, children are assisted in strengthening self-esteem, increasing awareness about drug and alcohol prevention, and creating consciousness about themselves and their environment.
In addition to the opening reception, therapists will conduct a free workshop, Art Heals: Exploring Relationships through Art, allowing for participants to experience the benefits of art therapy.
The evening will also feature speaker, Dr. Cheryl Holder, who devotes her time and energy to special populations. Dr. Holder and her team find innovative ways to take AIDS education and prevention programs to the local population. Following the Community Engagement Speaker, The Frost invites student organizations to present information about their organizations philanthropic efforts and their involvement win African American cultural groups.
