The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents two new exhibitions: Iván Navarro: Fluorescent Light Sculptures and Reflections Across Time: Seminole Portraits.
Chilean-born Iván Navarro’s light sculptures have evolved from his extensive exploration of light and electrical materials, together with a profound interest in enriching a dialogue with modern and contemporary artists, designers, architects, and musicians who have made significant contributions to art history. Fluorescent Light Sculptures features three floor sculptures, fourteen wall sculptures, and three videos that illuminate the thematic directions of his multilayered practice over a decade. The Nowhere Man series, shown here in its entirety for the first time in a museum in the U.S., engages and transforms the iconic pictograms originally created for the 1972 Olympics. Videos are as important to Navarro’s practice as his sculptures: The three videos on view illustrate the artist’s conceptual and formal reach. The exhibition is curated by Julia P. Herzberg.
The Reflections Across Time: Seminole Portraits exhibition results from a collaboration between two Smithsonian Affiliates – the Frost Art Museum and the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum of the Seminole Tribe of Florida—merging Native American portraiture with Native American ethnographic materials. Over 150 years of portraits of Seminole leaders and tribal members by George Catlin, Edward Curtis and other noted nineteenth and twentieth-century artists are featured. The artwork of prominent Seminole artists will illustrate the pride and vision of their heritage as a reflection of historical images and how their significance is transformed for the present. Traditional regalia, including pieces attributed to Osceola and other Seminoles, are exhibited with artwork from The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the National Museum of the American Indian, along with the National Gallery of Art and collections from the two host museums. The Reflections Across Time: Seminole Portraits exhibition is particularly timely in that President Obama has proclaimed November 2012 as National Native American Heritage Month. The exhibition is curated by Annette B. Fromm.
