The Work of Esteban Blanco

at Contemporanea Fine Art. From Jan 4th – Jan 29th, 2008.

Esteban Blanco. Miami ArtistsContemporane Fine Art, located on Miami's Calle 8, will be presenting the work of Miami based artists Esteban Blanco through this month. Take a moment to experience a visual playground filled with fragments from a childhood that would have suited Kafka and Bosch. The new work by Cuban-born artist Esteban Blanco further explores his interest in the ambivalence of toy-violent imagery, while reflecting his preoccupation with power, wealth, religion and science and the manifestation of these themes in popular culture.

As with last year’s “Playing With Dolls” series, in which the ubiquitous Barbie doll played heroine and mock victim in a series of theatrical tableaus, the new work mines the emblematic and suggestive power of the toy. But instead of focusing on the sadomasochism of Barbie’s narrow scope, these pieces range over wider social and cultural themes.

“In America, we profess separation of church and state while our politicians proclaim their dependence on faith. We have the most developed scientific community in the world, but we obsess about Atlantis, flying saucers and crop circles. And while we cherish the ideal of a peace-loving nation, we also manufacture and consume close to 80% of the military hardware in the world. What could be more fun than playing with our national myths? A hundred years from now, people will look at our art and, with the benefit of hindsight, will judge us as a society. What that judgment will be is anyone’s guess. My work is my best guess”, says Blanco.
