Tigertail presents Playwright, Comedian, Queer Poet Regie Cabico

January 14 through 18, 2013.

Tigertail Productions continues its SpeakOut project for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning) teens with a weeklong residency with nationally recognized Washington, DC-based, Filipino-American spoken word pioneer Regie Cabico. Scheduled for the week are school and community workshops, a poetry slam for LGBTQ youth and a reading for a general audience. All events are free and open to all.

Following the extraordinary power of Regie Cabico’s SpeakOut residency in 2010, Tigertail asked him to return for our 2013 SpeakOut. During his residency, Regie Cabico will lead workshops for students at Miami-Dade public high schools, hosted by individual Gay Straight Alliances/Safe Schools South Florida and other groups. The high schools involved include Dr. Michael Krop Senior High, Alonzo & Tracy Mourning Senior High, New World School of the Arts, North Miami Senior High, and Miami Arts Charter School, as well as Pridelines. SpeakOut workshops train LGBTQ youth in writing and speaking skills within a medium that blends poetry, theater and hip hop culture and also provides opportunities for LGBTQ teens to perform their work.

The youth component of the residency culminates in a SpeakOut Open Mic and Slam for LGBTQ teens, hosted by Regie Cabico at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, 2000 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach, on Thursday, January 17 at 6:00 pm. This is an opportunity for teens to read and perform their poetry, as well as to experience Cabicos performance work. There is no charge to attend but each participant must be between 13 and 19 years old and material must be gay friendly. No reservations are needed. Those interested in the Open Mic and Slam must register at the event between 5:00 and 6:00 pm at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. Finally, Regie will read and perform his writings and poetry on Friday, January 18 at 8:00 p.m., at Books & Book Coral Gables.
