Viewpoint: 2011 CIFO Grants and Commissions Program Exhibition

From Sept 9 through Nov 6, 2011.

Viewpoint: 2011 CIFO Grants and Commissions Program Exhibition is the eighth annual exhibition dedicated to the foundation’s grants programs at the CIFO Art Space. The exhibition presents newly commissioned works by Laura Belém (Brazil), Marcius Galan (Brazil); Fritzia Irizar Rojo (Mexico); David Lamelas (Argentina); Begoña Morales (Peru); Amalia Pica (Argentina); Antonio Vega (Mexico) and Alicia Villarreal (Chile).

The works in this exhibition, by artists whose experiences range from emerging to mid-career, examines the relationships and highlights the commonalities between artists with varied conceptual approaches and generational divides.

The title of the exhibition, Viewpoint, plays on the idea of a point as a place from which to view. Starting from the artist, through the viewer and back, it is the relationship with and through the artwork that is the focus of this exhibition. It documents the transition of works (whether in video, photography, performances, sound, space interventions and drawings) from a personal place where a work is born as a subjective idea, to the exhibition space where it is transformed into an object to be experienced. Viewpoint provides a unique opportunity to explore a rich and complex sampling of the artistic dialogue that characterizes Latin America today.

Primary Flight and CIFO have partnered to create a block-sized mural by a Miami-based artist from Latin America at the CIFO Art Space. Over the years, the CIFO Art Space has transformed the Downtown Miami skyline with its mosaic façade and this mural will only add to the building’s unique presence. The CIFO Art Wall is set to be completed by September, in time for Viewpoint: 2011 CIFO Grants and Commissions Program Exhibition. The collaboration also supports Fund-A-Project, CIFO’s mico-funding initiative.

A trend that gained mainstream momentum during the 1970s, this funding model reflects a balance between philanthropy and traditional business practice. It is a way that you can support and become involved in the creation of a new work via your small donations.

“Primary Flight was conceived four years ago because a few local artists wanted to show their work during Art Basel and took matters into their own hands,” said Books IIII Bischof, PF founder and curator. “We chose the streets as our canvas because we couldn’t wait on galleries to give us a shot, and wanted to create a sense of entrepreneurship amongst artists and within the industry. As a collective committed to maintaining our artistic integrity, micro-financing allows us to rally financial and moral support for our message as it is, inherently intuitive and raw.” For more information on Primary Flight, visit: www.primaryflight.com
