Writing Workshops by local writer Vanessa Garcia

From August 19 through September 9, 2013.

Have you had an idea running around your head for a novel, or a short story; a piece of creative non-fiction, or a memoir, but you just haven‚t gotten around to writing it? Do you already have a piece of fiction or non-fiction that needs the careful eyes of outside readers? Or, have you always wanted to take a writing class, but didn‚t want to enroll for a whole semester? Then, this workshop is for you.

August 19 – September 9, 2013, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
First Pages is a One Month Writer’s Workshop that meets once a week every

What you’ll Get: You will learn the basics of Crafting Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction. You will learn how to start writing, and, most importantly, how to keep writing. You will learn technique and you will acquire a toolbox of skills to set you on your writing path. You will not have to buy any books – all texts will be provided by the instructor. You will receive week-long assignments and there will be online discussions during the week, if you wish to participate in them. The instructor will also be there for you outside of the workshop as well as inside, if you so desire.

Every writer will have a chance to be workshopped within the course of the month. You will receive one-on-one critiques and you will provide critiques for other writers.

This workshop can be mellow if you want it to be or it can be intensive. That part is up to you. This is not a “class”; it’s an open workshop. If you simply need outsiders to read your work, to be workshopped, then that’s okay. If you want to really get your hands dirty – then that’s good too. This will be a mixed group and the instructor will focus on your individual needs.

The course will be led by Vanessa Garcia who has taught intro to creative writing at The University of California Irivine; The University of Miami; Johns Hopkins CTY program; Miami Dade Community College, among other colleges, universities, high schools and institutions. She reports and writes for numerous publications such as The New York Times; The LA Times; The Miami Herald, among other publications. She’s also a Huffington Post Blogger. She has a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University; an MFA in Fiction from The University of Miami; and an MA from the University of California Irvine, where she is currently a PhD Candidate.
