Tue 18 May, 2017

Simultaneously in the auditorium, a screening of “Liberty in a Soup,” a film that reveals the origin of the “Soup Joumou” and its connection with the Haitian Revolution and Haiti’s Independence Day.

Symbi Roots brings the groundbreaking all-female rara band led by bandleader Dieuvela Etienne out of her cultural center in Port-au-Prince. The group presents rara (Haitian horn and percussion-fueled festival music) in a fresh context, building on the traditions of the style and adding in elements of chanson, jazz and pop. The girls of Symbi Roots have joined ArcadeFire for a show-stopping finale at Jacmel Carnival, they have taken their show to France and the Caribbean, and now they make their US debut at TransAtlantic Festival.
