Irish poet Paul Perry returns to the UM Coral Gables campus October 22nd and 23rd as part of the Goran Reading Series to honor his professor, Lester Goran’s 50-year teaching legacy.
Perry is the author and editor of a number of critically acclaimed books including The Drowning of the Saints, Goldsmith’s Ghost, and The Orchid Keeper. A winner of the New Irish Writer of the Year Award, he most recently published a book of poetry, The Last Falcon and Small Ordinance, which was described by Dermot Bolger in The Sunday Business Post as “the work of a singular imagination,” and 108 Moons, the selected poems of Jurga Ivanauskaite, which Perry translated into English with Ruta Suchodolskyte. He teaches creative writing for Kingston University, London, and University College Dublin and is Course Director in Poetry for the Faber Academy in Dublin.

All Goran Reading Series events are free and open to the public; while the master class is primarily focused on UM students, the community is welcome to attend and observe. About the Goran Reading Series
Since English Professor Lester Goran arrived at the University of Miami in 1960, his teaching and leadership have reverberated far beyond the classroom walls. His former students include professors who teach in the US and in Europe, literary-journal editors, and New York Times best-selling authors. The ’10-’11 Goran Reading Series provides an opportunity for members of both the UM and greater-Miami communities to celebrate Goran’s 50-year teaching legacy through readings, master classes and workshops with some of his most accomplished students. In addition to teaching more than 20,000 students during his career at UM, Goran has continued to publish novels and short-story collections. He was also instrumental in helping to establish the first creative-writing curriculum at UM in 1965 and the MFA program in 1991.
