The 2017-18 season—the company’s 77th—opens on Saturday, November 11, with Donizetti’s bel-canto classic Lucia di Lammermoor. Soprano Anna Christy, whose résumé includes the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, puts her individual stamp on the demanding title role of the Scottish girl whose family pushes her into a deadly unwanted marriage to restore its waning fortunes; alternating with Christy throughout the run is award-winning Met soprano Haeran Hong. Joshua Guerrero and Jesús Leon, two of the fastest-rising tenors on the international scene today, portray Lucia’s tormented suitor Edgardo. Elise Sandell directs the production, which is led by Maestro Alexander Polianichko, whose conducted last season’s Eugene Onegin at FGO and was hailed by South Florida Classical Review for “obtaining some of the opera orchestra’s best playing.”

Susan T. Danis, General Director and CEO of Florida Grand Opera said: “This is the season that FGO has been working toward since I came to the company five years ago. With an exciting range of operas, all cast to strength with the finest singers available, our season will have something for everyone. Critics and audiences agreed that our 2016-17 season represented an artistic pinnacle for the company. I believe that FGO will reach an even higher level in 2017-18.”

Single (non-subscription) tickets for Florida Grand Opera’s 2017-18 season are now on sale. Single tickets are priced from $12 to $250, and may be purchased at fgo.org, or by calling 1-800-741-1010. Salome

January 27, 2018 brings FGO’s staging of Richard Strauss’s shattering masterpiece of sexual fury and religious fervor, Salome. Sopranos Melody Moore and Kirsten Chambers bring their individual interpretations to the title role of the Judean princess who forces her will on her stepfather, the lustful King Herod, and pays for it with her life. The two sopranos are supported by a powerhouse cast of international artists: baritone Mark Delavan as the prophet Jochanaan, tenor John Easterlin as the depraved Herod, and mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Bishop as the dissolute Herodias. Timothy Myers, who last season led Wexford Festival Opera’s universally acclaimed staging of Samuel Barber’s Vanessa, is the conductor. FGO’s production is in the hands of celebrated stage director Bernard Uzan.

Beginning March 17, FGO offers the company’s first-ever production of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s ground-breaking work Orfeo ed Euridice. The staging stars two brilliant countertenors, Anthony Roth Costanzo, a first-prize winner in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition and John Holiday, who this summer enjoyed a personal triumph in the Glimmerglass Festival’s production of Handel’s Xerxes. Costanzo will be partnered by Cuban-American soprano Eglise Gutiérrez, who last appeared at FGO in Massenet’s Thaïs in 2014. Keturah Stickann is the director; Anthony Barrese conducts.

Florencia en el Amazonas

The season concludes with Daniel Catán’s enormously popular 1995 work Florencia en el Amazonas, about an enigmatic opera diva who takes a boat up the Amazon in search of her missing husband. “People who think they don’t like modern opera don’t need to worry about Florencia,” observed Susan Danis. “It’s a lush, lyrical opera, full of glorious melodies that may remind listeners of the romantic spirit of Puccini.” Florencia is the latest entry in FGO’s “Made for Miami” series, a collection of operas that connect in specific ways with members of of South Florida’s richly diverse community. Acclaimed soprano Ana María Martínez, star of the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera, and Sandra López, of the Met and the Gran Teatro la Fenice, share the title role. The production is staged by Jose Maria Condemi, with FGO’s principal conductor, Ramón Tebar, at the podium.
