FUNDarte presents Gema y Pável in Concert

Colony Theater. Feb 13, 2011. 7:00 p.m.

altGema y Pável are a contemporary Cuban duo whose music is as influenced by the Beatles as by Nueva Trova, by Chick Corea as by Caetano Veloso or the Argentine singer Fito Páez.

They have just released an album dedicated to Puerto Rican composers and songwriters called “Ofrenda a Borinquen” in celebration of their twenty years as a musical duo. Gema Corredera and Pável Urkiza got their start singing in the streets of Havana and have added their sense of street smarts to their appreciation of Cuban trovas and boleros, the Afro-Cuban rhythms of the Yoruba and modern rock music.

The months and years of paying their dues have resulted in the creation of a new style of urban Cuban music, full of rhythm and subtlety, light-hearted in sound and serious in intent. They bypassed the salsa sounds, created their own progressive fusion and have introduced jazz, rock and Brazilian sounds in traditional Cuban music.
